| A Thought For The
Week: "THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD " What do we mean by this expression? We mean the supremacy of God, the kingship of God, the Godhood of God. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that GOD IS GOD. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Most High, doing according to His will in the anny of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth, so that none can stay His hand or say unto Him what doest Thou? (Dan. 4:35). To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the Almighty, the possessor of all power in heaven and earth, so that none can defeat His counsels, thwart His purpose, or resist 1-Us will (Psalm 115:3). To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is "the governor among the nations" (Psalm 22:28). setting up kingdoms, overthrowing empires, and determining the course of dynasties as pleaseth Him best. To say that God is sovereign is to declare that He is the "only potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords" (1 Tim. 6:15). Such is THE GOD OF THE BIBLE! When we say that God is sovereign, we affirm His right to govern the universe, which He has made for His own glory; and He has the right of the potter over the clay. He may mould that clay into whatever form He chooses, fashioning out of the same lump one vessel unto honor and another unto dishonor. He is under no rule nor law out. side of His own will and nature; God is a law unto Himself; He is under no obligation to give an account of His matters to any. By: A.W. Pink |
| News For The Week ...Recent statistics indicate that San Francisco is the gayest city in the world -- and it has nothing to do with the happiness of its residents. In an interview with Reuters, the head of HIV/AIDS statistics at the city's Department of Public Health says even though the overall population of San Francisco has dropped in the last five years, there has been "an absolute gain in gay men." William McFarland estimates that, based on his recent survey -- the city's first in five years on homosexual men and HIV -- nearly one in five of city's males age 15 and above (more than 63,000) are homosexual. "From all the data I have seen ... it's the gayest city in the world," he observes. The report also notes that one out of every four homosexual males in San Francisco (25.8 percent) is infected with the HIV virus, resulting in an estimated 16,401 HIV-positive men. A five-city study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2005 places San Francisco second only in that category to Baltimore, with an estimated 40 percent. In 2001, nearly 30 percent of San Francisco's male homosexual population were infected with the HIV virus. McFarland attributes the overall increase in that segment of the population and the drop in HIV-positive males to an influx of more HIV-negative men to the area. | A Thought From C. H.
Spurgeon: "A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me." Song 1:13 Myrrh may well be chosen as the type of Jesus on account of its
preciousness, its perfume, its pleasantness, its healing, preserving,
disinfecting qualities, and its connection with sacrifice. But why is He
compared to "a bundle of myrrh"? First, for plenty. He is not a drop of
it, He is a casket full. He is not a sprig or flower of it, but a whole
bundle. There is enough in Christ for all my necessities; let me not be
slow to avail myself of Him. Our well-beloved is compared to a "bundle"
again, for variety: for there is in Christ not only the one thing
needful, but in "Him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily,"
everything needful is in Him. Take Jesus in His different characters,
and you will see a marvellous variety--Prophet, Priest, King, Husband,
Friend, Shepherd. Consider Him in His life, death, resurrection,
ascension, second advent; view Him in His virtue, gentleness, courage,
self-denial, love, faithfulness, truth, righteousness-- everywhere He is
a bundle of preciousness. He is a "bundle of myrrh" for
preservation--not loose myrrh tied up, myrrh to be stored in a casket.
We must value Him as our best treasure; we must prize His words and His
ordinances; and we must keep our thoughts of Him and knowledge of Him as
under lock and key, lest the devil should steal anything from us.
Moreover, Jesus is a "bundle of myrrh" for speciality. The emblem
suggests the idea of distinguishing, discriminating grace. From before
the foundation of the world, He was set apart for His people; and He
gives forth His perfume only to those who understand how to enter into
communion with Him, to have close dealings with Him. Oh! blessed people
whom the Lord hath admitted into His secrets, and for whom He sets
Himself apart. Oh! choice and happy who are thus made to say, "A bundle
of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me." |

| EXALTING THE
SAVIOUR "...that in all things He might have the preeminence" (Col. 1:18). This is the unchanging purpose and decree of our heavenly Father; and it shall be! The question with which I am faced is: "Am I in tune with and totally submitted to this divine arrangement?" To accomplish His purpose and exalt the Saviour, God may be pleased
to smash my plans, bring me great sorrow, humiliate and embarrass me to
the delight of my enemies, and prove me right or wrong depending upon
His will. But "the servant is not greater than his master," and the
flesh and master cannot both be lifted up! Too often eyes are focused
upon us, lips speak our names, men trust our judgment, and confidence is
placed in the flesh. When this happens, without fail the man has to be
brought down that the Lord may be exalted. Copied from an old Baptist Examiner |
