A Thought From Our Pastor:

Propitiation That Is Pronounced Pro-pit-ia-tion

"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." 1 John 4:10

We have before us a word that is rarely used in the pulpits today and rates very low on the believers list of words, however it is one of the top single most important words to the believer. Now how about it, before you read any further can you define this word without help?

The word "Propitiation" comes from the Greek word "hil-as-mos" which means "merciful" however the extended meaning I have found goes much deeper and more important than just "merciful" Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words defines it this way "that Jesus Christ Himself, through the expiatory (redemptive) sacrifice of His Death, is the Personal means by whom God shows mercy to the sinner who believes on Christ as the One thus provided." L. W. Rodgers defined it in another wonderful way "The appeasing, or turning away of the wrath of a righteous God against sin, and the acceptance of Christ's death as a satisfactory substitute for the sinner." So beloved let's look at it this way, God's justice for sin is eternal damnation in the lake of fire where the fire is never put out and their worm never dies or (they never find redemption). However our merciful of God has predetermined a way for sinful men and women to escape His true punishment for sin and nailed all of our sin to the cross in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Beloved this makes Jesus Christ our "Propitiation". Now beloved there can be no doubt that God has a great wrath awaiting those who have not and will not believe that Jesus Christ is their Saviour. I know that so many through history and even today want to belittle this, but it is so very true. Everyone who has never trust the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour will spend eternity in HELL, where there is no escape. Romans 1:18 "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;" and we can read in verse 17 "...The just shall live by faith." However in Romans 3:24-25 Paul says "Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;"

The word Propitiation allows us to understand the grace of God much more wonderfully because He sent His only begotten Son to give His life for our sins and allowed (through mercy) us to escape His righteous punishment of eternal death in hell and allowed us to have eternal life with Him in heaven. Beloved it is not about our choosing or decision or even what our will is, but rather it is about what God has done for us; IE making the decision and choice for us before the foundation of the world and changing our wills in His work of our repentance.

A Thought By: C. H. Spurgeon:

True Heart-Energy
"Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them, that thy profiting may appear to all" 1 Timothy 4:15

This is, practically, a promise that, by diligent meditation and the giving up of our whole mind to our work for the LORD we shall make a progress which all can see. Not by hasty reading but by deep meditation we profit by the Word of God. Not by doing a great deal of work in a slovenly manner, but by giving our best thought to what we attempt, we shall get real profit. "In all labor there is profit" but not in fuss and hurry without true heart-energy.

If we divide ourselves between God and mammon, or Christ and self, we shall make no progress. We must give ourselves wholly to holy things, or else we shall be poor traders in heavenly business, and at our stocktaking no profit will be shown.

Am I a minister? Let me be a minister wholly and not spend my energies upon secondary concerns. What have I to do with party politics or vain amusements? Am I a Christian? Let me make my service of Jesus my occupation, my lifework, my one pursuit. We must be in-and-in with Jesus, and then out-and-out for Jesus, or else we shall make neither progress nor profit, and neither the church nor the world will feel the forceful influence which the LORD would have us exercise.

NUGGETS FOUND HERE AND THERE:

"Why come to Christ? Because of WHO HE IS–the eternal Son of God. Because of WHAT HE HAS DONE–He died on the cross for sinners. Because of WHERE HE IS NOW–at the right hand of the Father interceding for sinners. Because in Him there is HOPE, HELP, REST, SALVATION for sinners."

"I have heard that beggars help one another. When one finds a house willing to help him with a good meal or a hand-out, he passes the word a long to others in need and they go there seeking help. Is this not a good description of Christian witnessing? One beggar telling another beggar where he can find food?"

"The believer is a mystery to others and to himself, also. He is sanctified, yet he feels himself to be the chief of sinners. He loves God's law, yet he wrestles with an inward desire to have his own way. He has great sorrow and heaviness of heart over others, yet he rejoices in the Lord always. His spirit longs to be with Christ, yet his flesh clings to the earth. He knows that he is secure in Christ, yet he examines his faith continually."

"I thought to prepare myself for great things only to learn that it was the rough voice in the wilderness He planned to use and not the polished preacher. It was the weak, impulsive shepherd with the sling that He planned to use and not the mighty warrior with his armor of wit and arsenal of facts, doctrines, and learning. If we don't pour contempton ourselves, GOD WILL!"

Ephesians 5:1-2

"Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; (2.) And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour."
