Text James 5:11 Job, The Patient A. Introduction 1. In the Bible the word Patience means long-suffering, to endure, or to be long tempered. a. These are all qualities we sometimes lack in our life, but should pray for everyday.. b. James says, “Behold, we count them happy which endure.” c. James also told us, “that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.” 2. Romans 12:12 “Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer;” The Lord reminds us in James 1:12 “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” 3. The Lord tells us suffering has rewards, Hebrews 6:15 “And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.” 4. It is the requirement of His ministers and Pastors, 2 Timothy 2:24 “And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,” B. James reminded us of the patience of Job, “Ye have heard of the patience of Job,” The greatest thing we all remember Job for is he never lost his patience. 1. We see Job’s Lose of his property, Job 1:13-17 “And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: (14.) And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: (15.) And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. (16.) While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. (17.) While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.” 2. We see Job’s Lose of his Children, Job 1:18-19 “While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house: (19.) And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. 3. We see Job’s Lose of his Health, Job 2:7-9 “So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown. (8.) And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat down among the ashes. (9.) Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.” 3. We see Job’s Lose of his Friends, Job 30:1 – 10 will not read. Job 19:19 “All my inward friends abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.” 4. We see that Job is victorious in his trial’s Job 19:1 – 27 however we will only read Job 19:23-29 “Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were printed in a book! (24.) That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! (25.) For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: (26.) And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: (27.) Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me. (28.) But ye should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me? (29.) Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.” 5. We see God’s blessings on Job for his sufferings, Job 42:10 “And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.” 6. We see Job’s blessings restored, Job 42:11, 13 “Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold. (13.) He had also seven sons and three daughters.” C. we are so reminded in the scriptures of patience. 1. Hebrews 12:1 “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,” “so great a cloud of witnesses,” is defined as the martyrs before us who stood and suffered for the Lord. John Gill say’s “they suffered in the cause, and for the sake of true religion; and they all bore a noble testimony of God, and for him; and they received a testimony from him; and will be hereafter witnesses for, or against us, to whom they are examples of the above graces:” This includes Job. 2. Romans 5:1-5 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: (2.) By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (3.) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; (4.) And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (5.) And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.” |
