A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 38 Chapter 6:6 – 11

  1. Verse 6 “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”
    1. “Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed…”

a.       The old man is the old sinful man or the sinful nature, the nature that condemns us to eternal damnation.

b.      It is called old man because it actually dates back to Adam.

c.       It is controlled by the “old serpent”

d.      The judgment on all “old men” is eternal damnation on all descendents of Adam.  that the body of sin might be destroyed…”

    1. “…that our old man is crucified with him…”

a.       To all that have or will someday trust Jesus Christ to be their Saviour.

b.      Therefore our “old man was crucified with Jesus Christ on the cross. Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

c.       Ephesians 4:22 “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;”

d.      Colossians 3:9 “Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;”

e.       It was Christ Jesus who came like sinful flesh to die for sinful flesh. Romans 8:3 “For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:”

    1. “…that henceforth we should not serve sin.”

a.       That is to under bondage to sin.

b.      Since our salvation, since the old man went to the cross with Christ, and since we see the destruction sin causes by His death.

c.        We should not any longer be subject to its control.

d.      Remember Grace overrides all our sin.

  1. Verse 7 “For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
    1. There is an old expression that says “"When one is dead he is free from commands." Sin no longer controls because that command died at Calvary.
    2. The word “freed” means justified or “For he that is dead at Calvary in Christ is justified from being controlled by sin.”
    3.  Acts 13:38-39 “Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is preached unto you the forgiveness of sins: (39.) And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.”
    4. 1 Peter 4:1 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;”
    5. Sin has been put to death therefore it should not have control over the believer no more than a master has dominion over a slave one the master is dead.
  2. Verse 8 “Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:”
    1. Since we died with Christ at Calvary and rose from the grave and now lives then we like wise rose from the grave of sin and live because He lives.
    2.  Since we live in Christ and with Christ then we should be seeking those things above and not the things of this earth.
    3. We also believe that were He is today we also one day will live with Him. Romans 6:9 – 11 “Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. (10.) For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. (11.)  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
