A Study of The Book of Romans
Lesson 32 Chapter 5:7 – 10
- Verse 7 “For scarcely for a righteous man will one
die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.”
- Let us remember where we left off last week,
verse 6 “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died
for the ungodly.”
a.
Since man was unable to bring himself to
justification, then Christ Jesus died for us.
b.
“in due time” at a time when
God had chosen.
- “For scarcely for a righteous man will one die…”
or it is rare for a righteous man to give his life for another person
or for their crimes.
a.
When Paul speaks of a “righteous man” here he is not
speaking of one saved by Christ Jesus necessarily but rather just a moral
good person in moral eyes.
b.
But how often is it that a person (let’s say) a
morally outstanding person would be willing to suffer for the sins of another
especially one who is morally evil or an even his enemy.
c.
This is why Paul said “scarcely” it is not
common.
- “…yet peradventure for a good man some would even
dare to die.”
a.
This man is good in nature morally, he has dedicated
to charity giving most if not all he has for others even those he may not
even know and doesn’t care whether they are evil or not. This would be a very
liberal person.
b.
It could be even he would give his life for others.
This would remind us somewhat of a soldier in the military; however we are
speaking of person for person.
c.
The Lord said in John
15:13 "Greater love hath no man than this, that
a man lay down his life for his friends." So if one were to do it it would be a loving gesture for sure.
- Verse 8 “But God commendeth
his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for
us."
- The word “commendeth”
means - "to place together," while one could go several
different ways with this, I like this one; what this verse places
together is God’s love and Christ sacrifice. God showed His love for
sinner’s even enemies of His in sending His Son to die on the cross for
our sins in the form of Christ Jesus.
- Man does not have to wonder how much God loved
them just look at the cross and your salvation. God chose you to be
His, He loved you with an eternal love, and caused you to be saved and
this is manifested in Christ Jesus.
- 1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also
hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might
bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the
Spirit:”
- 1 John
3:16 “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his
life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.” Not
that God Himself died, but as in the man Christ Jesus it was like unto
God dying.
- While it would be very noble for one to give his
life for another, it would do nothing for his spiritual condition;
however with Christ Jesus it was different.
- Verse 9 “Much more then, being now justified by his
blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.”
- “Much more then…” – that is to a much greater
degree than just that He died for our sins, to a much greater degree
than just that He reconciled us with God, to a much greater degree than just
that He will allow us to spend eternity with God, by “…being now
justified by his blood…” but there is more; Galatians 2:20 “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I
live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and
the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son
of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
- “…we shall be saved from wrath through him.” That
is we will not suffer the righteous anger of God against sinners. Not that we will not suffer wrath
from others but as believers in Christ Jesus we will never suffer wrath
from God, EVER!
- What a glorious position it is to be a child of
God!! Verse 10 “For if, when
we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much
more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”
