A Study of The Book of Romans Lesson 31 Chapter 5:5 – 6
a. Paul uses this same Greek word in Romans 9:33 "As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed." b. Paul uses it again in Romans 10:11 "For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed." This sounds more like a promise to me. It is believed one of the scriptures Paul was referring to was Isaiah 49:23 “And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me.” Those that have hope understand they will not be disappointed and therefore we can with happiness have patience to wait on the Lord even in tribulation. c. Psalms 22:4-5 “Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them. (5.) They cried unto thee, and were delivered: they trusted in thee, and were not confounded (ashamed or disgraced or disappointed).
a. Paul gives us the reason we are not ashamed or disgraced or disappointed, it is because of God’s love to us, not our love to God but rather His love toward us. Salvation is because of His love and not ours toward Him. The words “shed abroad” means - to pour forth or to run out from God to our hearts. b. We have everything good because of God’s love, we love Him with His love, and we love each other with His love. 1 John 4:19 “We love him, because he first loved us.” c. This is the reason we have hope and that we will never be disappointed.
a. The deliver from God to man. It was the Holy Sprit that delivers to us salvation, it is He who teaches us all things, and it is He who strengthens us in these benefits. Galatians 5:22 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” b. 1 Corinthians 6:19 “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” c. The Holy Spirit is our gift from the Father to us, and as much as Jesus Christ is to our salvation, the Holy Spirit is to our deliverance.
