A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 30 Chapter 5:1 – 4

  1. Verse 1 “Romans 5:1 “Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:”
    1. “Therefore being justified by faith…” “Therefore” means -certainly, or accordingly but also refers back to the last 4 chapters. Can there be any doubt after the last four chapters that salvation is by grace through faith as described in Ephesians 2:8?

a.       Paul covered works from every possible angle and this is his final conclusion.

b.      Those that believe in salvation by works could not be more wrong!

    1. “…we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” – This begins what is known as the eight benefits of salvation and all eight will bless our hearts.  Peace 5:1 - Access 5:2 - Hope 5:2 - Triumph in Tribulation 5:3 - 4 - The Love of God 5:5 - The Holy Spirit 5:6 - 8 - Deliverance from wrath 5:9 - 10 - And Joy 5:11 and over the next couple of weeks we are going to study all eight.

a.       The first is “Peace” – rest by implication prosperity. Remember the Lord told us in Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

b.      It is most wonderful to have peace with God, He is our Father and us His children, and while we may not have peace with this world we do with God.

c.       Ever since Adam man has been running from God, but through Jesus Christ and His gift to us we no longer have to run in fear but we can rest in peace. John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

d.      Romans 14:17 “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”

e.       Isaiah 32:17 “And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.”

  1. Verse 2 “By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
    1. “By whom also we have access by faith…” The word “access” means – admission – or as Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words put’s it (bringing into the presence of God) We in Christ Jesus and through faith have access to the presence of God. Most wonderful!

a.       We can as Christians stand in God’s presence – now through prayer – and soon actually standing face to face (so to speak) with God.

b.      Adam Clarke's Commentary put it this way “We are not brought to God for the purpose of an interview, but to remain with him; to be his household; and, by faith, to behold his face, and walk in the light of his countenance.”

c.       Let us not forget Jesus said in John 14:6 “Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”

d.      Pray beloved, you have access to the Most High and He hears you!

    1. “…and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”

a.       Hope means – confidence – and according to Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words it means - confident expectation - confident expectation in the unseen and the future.

b.      Romans 8:24-25 “For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? (25.) But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.”

c.       Titus 2:13 “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;” Our hope is Christ Jesus and only in Christ Jesus. There is no hope outside of Christ Jesus.

d.      This is our hope or our confident expectation - Galatians 4:7 “Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.”

  1. Verses 3 - 4 "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; (4.) And patience, experience; and experience, hope:”
    1. This is our fourth benefit of salvation Triumph in Tribulation by “Triumph” we mean to joy or delight, which is hard for the lost person to understand.

a.       Please notice three words in these two verses – joy, hope, and patience – and all three are tide to tribulations, how strange. Galatians 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering (which is patience), gentleness, goodness, faith,”

b.      J. Vernon McGee's Thru The Bible said “we joy in troubles, knowing that trouble works patience -- patience doesn't come automatically -- and patience, experience; and experience, hope.”

c.       Notice also the Lord said in verse 3 “…knowing that tribulation worketh patience;” Our tribulations brings us to the point of patience which comes with experience of the tribulations. The more tribulations the more patience you will have, which all of this equals hope or looking for Jesus.

    1. 2 Corinthians 1:3-6 "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; (4.) Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (5.) For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. (6.) And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.”
    2. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 "And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (10.) Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.”
