A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 12 Chapter 2:5 – 6

  1. Verse 5 “But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;”
    1. Lets not forget our context, and the context is verse 2 “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.” – The context is God’s judgment, and God’s judgment is in absolute truth.

a.       Absolute truth because He knows every idol word we speak. Matthew 12:36 “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.”

b.      His judgment is true because He knows every deed man has done.

c.       Hid judgment is truth because He is TRUTH!

    1. V. 5 “But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath…”

a.       Let’s put this in terminology that makes it simple to understand. The word “after” means – concerning or in respect to. The word “hardness” means – callousness or stubbornness and the word “impenitent” means – unrepentant. So the verse reads – “But concerning or in respect to callousness or stubbornness of your heart you lay up for yourself wrath or punishment. – this is their future.

b.      John Gill says “they are the authors of their own destruction; by which is meant the wrath of God, in opposition to the riches of his goodness”

c.       Just as Pharaoh’s heart was hardened by God it was also hardened by himself.

d.       1 Thessalonians 2:16 “Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they might be saved, to fill up their sins alway: for the wrath is come upon them to the uttermost.”

e.       Jeremiah 4:4 “Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: lest my fury come forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.”

    1. V. 5 “against the day of wrath”

a.       The day of wrath here is God’s wrath or His anger, indignation, or vengeance. Judgment day is coming and the judge of absolute truth will remember their sins and punish them accordingly.

b.      All they are doing in this life is building up a more harsh punishment in eternal punishment.

c.       This is at the great white throne judgment, when God will give them their due. John 3:36 “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”

    1. V. 5 “and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;”

a.       The word “revelation” comes from the Greek word meaning to remove the cover and here means - disclosure: - appearing, manifestation, or to be revealed. They are going to see God for the first time, and they will not like what they see. 2 Thessalonians 1:6 “Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;”

b.      They will not like His judgment but as verse 5 concludes “of the righteous judgment of God” He is the absolute judge of truth and knows all things, good and bad. Ecclesiastes 12:14 “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

c.       Barnes' Notes on the New Testament said – “How foolish, as well as wicked, is it to lay up such a treasure for the future; to have the only inheritance in the eternal world, an inheritance of wrath and woe!”

d.      Isaiah 13:6 “Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.”

  1. Verse 6 “Who will render to every man according to his deeds:”
    1. The word “render” means – to give a reward. There are two types of rewards the rewards of crowns and the just reward for sin.
    2. Jeremiah 17:10 “I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.”
    3. Man wants to be judged by his works - he will be, man wants a just reward – he will get one, both lost and saved will receive just rewards, thank God Jesus Christ shed His blood to cleanse my sins.
    4. 2 Corinthians 5:10 “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”
