A Study of The Book of Romans

Lesson 10 Chapter 2:1 – 2

I.       Introduction

A. Chapter 2 begins where Chapter 1 stopped.

      1. Paul ended chapter 1 with describing man as totally depraved.

      2. Not just a certain people but all of mankind. Romans 3:10-12 “As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (11.)There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. (12.) They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.”

      3. No man ever outside of Jesus Christ has ever on his own been worth anything to God.

B. Human Nature will disagree, however we are all the same in the flesh, totally depraved.

II.    Verse 1 “Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.”

A. “Therefore” - for which cause or since man is totally depraved, and since there is nothing good in us, and since without Christ Jesus we are all deserving and going to hell, we have nothing about us to brag about or accuse another.

B.  ...thou art inexcusable...”  - without excuse – This word is the same one used in Romans 1:20 "For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:" Paul said in Galatians 5:3 "For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law." Therefore if we break one law we are guilty of all. The best of us is just as bad as the worst of us in God's eye's without Christ Jesus.

C. “...whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.”

       1. The word “ whosoever” means all or the whole, it includes all of mankind from Adam on. Jew or Gentile it does not matter.

       2. Who are you to judge another? Is anyone in the flesh better than another. The Lord Jesus said Matthew 7:2 “For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” It would be like a murder judging another murder. To judge another is to presume that you have nothing to be judged in yourself.

       3. Matthew 7:3 "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?"

       4. Life Application Bible Commentary - “Paul's accusation cannot be missed. Whenever we find ourselves feeling justifiably angry about someone's sin, we should be careful. We need to speak out against sin, but we must do so with a spirit of humility. Often the sins we notice most clearly in others are the ones that have taken root in us. If we look closely at ourselves, we may find that we are committing the same sin. The unrighteous excuse themselves while condemning others. The truly righteous overlook faults in others but try to see their own faults.”

III. Verse 2 “But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

A. What is meant by the “judgment of God” is after death. The saved and the lost will be judged after death.

        1. Man judges by mans laws and sometimes prejudice and partial perception, but never in absolute truth.

        2. Life Application Bible Commentary - “God's judgment is based on the truth—he judges on the basis of the facts about what we do. We only know in part, but God knows fully. Whereas our judgment of others is imperfect and partial, his is perfect and impartial.”

        3. God will judge sin for what it is, whether Jew of Gentile we will all be judged with no respect of person's.

       4. Romans 2:21 "Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?"

       5. James 4:12 "There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?"

B. “the judgment of God is according to truth” God knows the facts, He knows the truth, and He knows the hidden things.

         1. Zephaniah 1:14-18 "The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. (15.) That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, (16.) A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. (17.) And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. (18.) Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD'S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.”

       2. Matthew 12:36 "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."

       3. Matthew 11:24 "But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee."
