A. Introduction

     1. The writer. That is the Apostle John the son of Zebedee.

          a. It is believed that this same John was also the writer of the Gospel John.

          b. Mostly because of V. 1 “That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;” with  John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (2.) The same was in the beginning with God. (3.) All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. (4.) In him was life; and the life was the light of men. (14.) And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

          c. John was very close to the Lord as was his brother both were Apostles. Matthew 4:21 “And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.”
          d. Matthew 10:2 “Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;”

           e. Notice V. 1  which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

          f. We will also see many other similarities between John and 1st John as we study further.

     2. We will see many wonderful things in this letter that is very good for the Christian.

          a. We will see our Christian walk. V. 3 “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.” And V. 6 “If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:”

          b. We will learn how to live. 1 John 2:5 “But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.”

          c. We will learn how to love. V. 15 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

         d. We will learn of seducers. V. V. 2:15-16 “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (16.) For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.”

         e. We will learn of our Anointing and preservation. V.  2:27  But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” We will see The Spirit, and the grace of the Spirit, are our Anointing.

          f. We will learn of our promise and assurance in Christ.  V. V.  2:28-29 “And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. (29.) If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.”

          g. We will learn that the Christian has God’s love. 1st John 3:1 “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.”

          h. We will learn that the Christian must have love toward each other. V. 3:11 “For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.”

          i. We will learn about testing spirits. V. 4:1 “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”

          j. We will learn about why we are to love one another. V. 4:7 “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.” (11.) “Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”

         k. We will learn that we as Christians prove our being Christians in two ways. V. V. 5:1-2  Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.” (2.) “By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments.”

          l. We will learn of the confidence we should have in Christ in Christ V. V. 5:14 – 15 “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:” (15.) “And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.”
